Senator Perry Thurston, Jr. is a Democratic representative for District 33, Thurston was elected last year.
Thurston is a graduate of Morehouse College, where he earned his bachelor degree in finance in 1982 and his J.D. from the University of Miami. In addition, Thurston, works as a practicing attorney for the state of Florida where he practices law in the Fort Lauderdale area.
Thurston one day saw a position opening and decided to take a risk and give it a chance. In an interview Thurston talks about his journey:
“An opening came open for the Florida House of Representatives, and I had several people to consider it including one of my mentors who was then made city commissioner,” Thurston said. “One day while in Pompano Beach, I decided that I could do a better job than the person that had the position the next thing I know I had won.”
In 2006, Thurston was elected to the Florida House of Representatives during his tenure Thurston, served on various committees they are the Safety & Security Council, Committee on Business Regulation, Committee on Courts, Committee on Education Innovation & Career Preparation.
Being a senator requires plenty of work, time and effort but Thurston, covers a lot of the geographical areas that lead 500,000 residents as opposed to being in the House of Representative were he represents approximately a 150,000 residents according to Thurston.
Today Thurston, does an excellent job at representing these many areas because the team around him has expanded. For example, instead of two people, Thurston now has three full time individuals to help make sure that things run properly and their job is to make sure in a lot of newer areas that we have people there to voice issues so that the Thurston representation can cover it.
When you are doing what is right some people will not always see eye to eye with your vision, here is what some of his constituents told Florida Politics in April 2017 in an article about him:
“Sen. Frank Artiles spouted insults and used a form of a racial epithet in front of Thurston and Sen. Audrey Gibson Monday night,” source said.
When he is not at the office, Thurston enjoys fathering and spending time with his wife and their two children. Thurston also enjoys going to many sporting events such the Miami Dolphins, Heat, Marlins and still finds time to exercise and to take care of his self.
In addition, Senator Thurston has helped better the lives of others by giving his time and efforts as a public servant for 12 years.
Weather in the Fort Lauderdale or Tallahassee area Senator Thurston, has a polite and kind attitude and it evident in how he treats others.
Eugene Moore, Jr. a college student and student intern that works in his Tallahassee office shares his thoughts on the Senator:
“Senator Thurston is a man of character, integrity, and action,” Moore said. “When you look at the landscape of Florida politics it is very rare that you see a government official with the kind of record that Senator Thurston has because he is always on the cutting edge of legislation that moves our state forward with his political record which is pretty impressive.”
No one gets elected and re-elected as many times as Senator Thurston has without some sort of acumen.
In fact, Senator Thurston is not finished yet because he will be a great political force for years to come.
