Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, is on the road to making history even in his own hometown.
Gillum admits that he is an underdog among the Democratic candidates that are running for governor. Gillum, announced that he was running for the office of governor through a YouTube video that he tweeted.
In a state that has a history of overturning early conventional wisdom, most Florida voters have not started to focus on the 2018 governor’s race. Especially, the race for the Democratic nomination that would feature some well-known candidates.
Gillum at age 37 has been seen as the raising star of the Democratic Party that is appealing for consequence after Donald Trump’s win in November. Gillum, who was born in Miami, announced in a biographical video, which his staff released early to the Times/Herald. This particular video displayed Gillum’s tough background — the video would go on to show his life and illustrate that he was one of seven children raised by a mother who was a city bus driver.
“We’d get up at 4 o’clock, 4:30 in the morning to make sure my mom could be on time to driving the bus,” Gillum says in an announcement video. “We would ride the bus for two or so hours before we would transfer and get on our bus for school.”
After seeing what Gillum has done for so many during his tenure as a political figure throughout the state of Florida.
While other candidates have announced their names for the running of governor it would include Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, former Tallahassee Congresswoman Gwen Graham, and Orlando trial attorney/medical marijuana advocate John Morgan on the Democratic side. In addition Gillum, is the only one in this group that is African American and the first serious bid for the African-American race since Daryl Jones, in 2002 after losing in the primary.
The Democratic Party has failed to produce a candidate of Mayor Gillum’s stature to inspire South Florida voters to come out and vote even when the presidency is not up for election.
Gillum is a young politician but very seasoned with his experience in various leadership roles for the Democratic Party.
With it being an election year, what are Gillum’s chances of winning the governor’s race for the state of Florida.
Mayor Gillum may have announced his candidacy for governor quiet early during the previous year.
Eugene Moore Jr., a Tallahassee resident shares his thoughts about the upcoming governor race and his percentages:
“Realistically its too early to tell, but I imagine its somewhere between slim and none,” Moore said. “Only because of the Florida political machine and of the somehow he’ll overcome that he’ll do fine.”
Voting is an expressive and interpretative form of democracy that allows the people to decide who they want in public office.
During an interview with the Pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and a NAACP member Reverend Dr. R.B. Holmes shares his thought on the matter:
“It is imperative that we vote and have an active part in our decisions that will affect our tomorrow,” Holmes said. “Mayor Gillum has so much promise, youth, energy but most of all experience which puts him in great shape for the race.”
This upcoming election season is sure to be an exciting one full of history, knowledge, and action that will leave the important decisions in the hands of the residents. With the outstanding help of his campaign team and Floridians. Mayor Gillum has a chance to win the governors race and please make sure you are registered to vote in the primary elections and let your voice be heard.
