Written by Joshua Lowder
John P. Kee, has overcome so many adversities by using his music to illustrate his journey. His career as a gospel singer, songwriter, and pastor of the New Life Fellowship Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. During an interview Pastor Kee, explains his story;
“God delivered me in Charlotte’s inner city from a life that mirrors the ills that we still face today.”
Inspired by the works of Revered James Cleveland, Kee, modeled his style after him ,and came into his own during his recordings as a solo artist or featuring his New Life Community Choir. In addition, his albums would go on to make him among the most popular contemporary gospel artists of the late 20th century, and early 21st century.
His best album, “Not Guilty,” had high ratings. Furthermore, these ratings are great but when it comes to gospel music, it is about the message, and how it is interpreted.
John. P Kee, shows his diversity as an artist by creating inspirational lyrics, uplifting songs by mixing funk, rhythm and blues, and soul in gospel music.
Kee has earned many nominations for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Award in the best gospel artist category. In 1990, he recorded his first solo album, “Just Me This Time,” which garnered the singer a Stellar Award for best male solo performance, and contemporary producer of the year award from the GMWA. “Just Me This Time,” was also nominated for a Dove Award in the category of traditional black gospel recorded songs.
When Kee is not producing, writing, and performing for his New Life Productions, he oversees an inner-city youth program in Charlotte. Divorced from his first wife, he keeps in close contact with his two children Christopher, and Shannon Kee from his first marriage. In December 1995, Kee, married his second wife Felice Sampson, and they are the parents of nine children.
He is a 54-year old man who expresses himself through song, and by his actions and character.
